The day the Soviet forces encircled Berlin, reconnaissance forces of the American 69th Division and the Russian 59th Division met at the River Elbe near Torgau, about 75 miles south of Berlin. It was the first encounter of ground forces of the West and the East. The photo shows a picture of President Roosevelt, wreathed in black mourning bands, alongside a likeness of Stalin. Evidently, pictures of the new President, Truman, were not yet available.
